Yvonne Ho AM, the Medical Specialist

Yvonne is a Melbourne University MBBS graduate with post-graduate specialisation in Radiology (FRANZCR). As one of their youngest graduates, she went on to subspecialise in Nuclear Medicine & Positron Emission Tomography (PET), to become the first Australian woman of Asian heritage and the first Victorian woman to be dually qualified in Radiology & Nuclear Medicine. She also holds a musculoskeletal fellowship from Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.

She has led various research teams, is an NMRC (National Medical Research Council) grant holder, and a prolific writer with more than 25 peer-reviewed publications internationally.

Yvonne was Assistant Professor and Divisional Head of a prominent radiology department in a tertiary, teaching hospital. In 2002, she pioneered the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) radiodiagnosis program beyond its traditional boundaries. This was the first time that this program was ever introduced elsewhere in the world, outside Australia and New Zealand. Via this scheme, she contributed positively to workforce and medical imaging availability internationally.

As a result of this, Singapore is (and continues to be) the only country in the world that is accredited for *both* Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) and FRANZCR training. This has enabled the exchange of education beyond geographical boundaries, beyond cultural differences.

The Australian and New Zealand radiology fraternity benefited from pioneering of the RANZCR program elsewhere in the world. Radiology trainees also benefited from being given the opportunity to train in Singapore, and to understand the medical system of another first world.

Yvonne was also pivotal in introducing PET-CT imaging to Singapore.

Well-known for her interesting lectures, she has been an invited international speaker in countries such as Italy, Japan, Indonesia, South Africa, Singapore and Australia. Additionally, she has presented in countries including USA, Austria, Poland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. She is a member of several Boards, Council and federal committees of her medical specialty in Australia.

On Australia Day 2015, Yvonne was awarded Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia. The Order of Australia, instituted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, is an Australian society of honour for the purpose of according recognition to Australian citizens and other persons for achievement or for meritorious service. She joins ranks with individuals such as Australian actors, Paul Hogan and Bryan Brown.

She is also a recipient of the 2014 Australia Awards.

In March 2013, Yvonne became an Inductee of the Victorian Honour Roll of Women. This Honour Roll celebrates and publicly recognises the achievements of inspirational women of the Australian state of Victoria. She now joins ranks with individuals such as Cathy Freeman (Australian gold medallist in 2000 Olympics), Dame Nellie Melba (operatic soprano who gained international fame in the late Victoria Era and early 20th century), Dame Elisabeth Murdoch (wife of newspaper magnate, Sir Keith Murdoch, and mother of Rupert Murdoch) and Dr Priscilla Kincaid-Smith (Australian physician and researcher who specialises in nephrology).

Yvonne is a descendant of Dr Wu Lien-teh (伍连德), a Queen's Scholar and the first person of Chinese heritage to graduate in medicine at Cambridge University. His successful fight that terminated the Chinese pneumonic plague of 1910 brought him international fame. He subsequently devoted thirty years of humanitarian service to China.
